The Weekly: Can We Make Blonde Mascara a Thing?

March 1, 2020

A New York minute:

Thursday, 5:29 p.m.

I’m four or five stops into the commute home. The man sitting next to me is eating something that smells very sweet, almost like artificially fruity. I take a quick glance and see he’s eating cut up strawberries with a fork out of a sandwich bag. And that’s when the scent of strawberries overwhelms me. After a very long day of event preparations, a day of emotional ups and downs, the smell of these strawberries immediately cheers me up. It’s the little things.

Stories that should be on your radar:

“Hot Ones’ Host Sean Evans Puts Back Cactus Tacos and Maple Crullers” (Grub Street), in which Evans discusses what he’s eating in New York one weekend.

“My Ex-Boyfriend’s New Girlfriend Is Lady Gaga” (New York Times), in which a NYT columnist explains how should found out her ex is now dating Lady Gaga, and questions how she could measure up.

Food for thought:

Bodega food is the food I didn’t know I needed. Next to my office, there is a bodega that I hadn’t set foot in until this week, and wow, was I missing out. They have everything! Coffee, muffins, doughnuts, sushi, breakfast sandwiches, soup, a hot food buffet. I got mac and cheese, mashed potatoes and a very tasty filet of fish for two days in a row this week. And it was worth the $15 both times.

Beauty hot take:

Blonde mascara needs to be a thing. I love black and brown mascaras, but I also love my naturally blonde lashes and want to highlight those more. So to cosmetic companies: Please make a blonde mascara. This has been a PSA.

Best product of the week:

Drugstore mascaras I’ve found can be real hit or miss. Some of the cult faves have never worked for me, but then my all-time favorite mascara (L’Oreal’s Unlimited mascara) was one I had heard little about before trying it. So when I was perusing the Duane Reade for a new mascara I remembered that some beauty YouTubers love Maybelline’s Lash Sensational mascara. A little hesitant, I bought the Lash Sensational Luscious version of the mascara, which has a tapered wand. I was shocked by how much I liked it. It gave my lashes so much length, and they stayed curled all day. Truly, it has the potential to become my new favorite mascara.

One last thought…

Did Gabriel Fernandez actually get justice? After watching The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez on Netflix about an 8-year-old boy who was tortured to death by his mom and her boyfriend, I’m wondering if Gabriel actually received the justice he deserved. Yes, his mom and her boyfriend were both found guilty and issued life without parole and the death penalty, respectively. But DCFS, the system that turned its back on Gabriel, hasn’t changed. At the end of the series, it’s mentioned that more children in California have died as a result of horrible abuse by their parents in ways that weren’t all that different from what Gabriel experienced. And so, can we actually say justice was served if, systematically, nothing changed, resulting in the deaths of more children at the hands of their parents? As much as I wish we could, I don’t think we really can.

On a lighter note, I miss the old Lady Gaga. Her new song, Stupid Love, dropped on Friday, and it's good, don't get me wrong. But, it feels like something any modern pop star could have written and recorded. Her theatricality, her pure talent and her vulnerability as an artist are what make her so unique, and her new song doesn't speak to that.
