The Weekly: Pour It Up, Pour It Up

A New York minute: 

Tuesday, 7:31 p.m.

I’m shocked. I just experienced my perfect event. Just minutes ago, I left the gorgeous Baccarat hotel where I was invited to a tasting session with Moët Hennessy to learn about the pioneering women behind their spirits. I’m not even a big drinker, but this was fascinating.

 

From the badass widow of yore behind Veuve Cliquot and the woman who specially tailors music to go with bottles of Krug, there are so many daring and innovative women in winemaking and spirit-making. The woman relying all of this to us was not only beautifully dressed (in a pink blazer I’d buy tomorrow), but she was also intensely knowledgeable and passionate about all of this. Truly, I wanted to be her friend by the end of this. The food pairings were lovely, mostly seafood to go with the champagnes, though a wagyu steak did make an appearance. From the food to the spirits (which actually changed my opinion about champagne for the better) to the passion to the size and scale of the event (6 media people, all women, for an hour and a half), this was my ideal event. And to think, I almost didn’t go. It takes a lot for me to want to go mingle at an event, but this one could not have been more worth it. And no, they did not ask me to say any of this. I’m truly floored.

Food for thought:

Overnight oats don't suck. Until Thursday, I was convinced that overnight oats were mushy and gross and not all that flavorful. That changed Thursday morning, when at Worth's Women and Worth Summit, I was contemplating breakfast. I was between grabbing a yogurt parfait with berries and granola and overnight oats with almonds and goji berries, when one of my coworkers told me that the overnight oats were really good and sort of maple-y, but not too sweet for breakfast (I don't believe in this idea, by the way, but I digress). Reluctantly, I reached for the overnight oats. And she was right, they were in fact very good. Would I eat this all the time? Eh, probably not. But for a morning where I wanted something light that I could eat between prepping to run social media for the event, it was very good. And the goji berries (which I'd never had before) were slightly tart and really nice against the creaminess of the oats. So that was a neat discovery. 

 

Beauty hot take:

Good shampoo is so underrated. I bought Function of Beauty's customizable shampoo and conditioner recently, and every time I wash my hair with it I can't help but be reminded of how good it truly is. I was suspicious of the customizable shampoo shtick, thinking it might just be a gimmick, but truly, this is the best shampoo I've ever used. It has made my hair noticeably healthier, shinier and keeps the blonde highlights in my hair in good condition. I'm also obsessed with the fact that I can choose to have a heat protectant in my shampoo. Having used it for at least a month now, I'm fully in love with this shampoo. And no, they aren't paying me to say this. It's truly amazing. 

 

Best product of the week:

A small bottle of Yellow Label Veuve Clicquot Brut. The Moët Hennessy event gave out, easily, the best gift bags of any event I've been to. And I truly fell in love with their champagnes and whiskeys during the tasting, so I was really excited to see a little bottle of Veuve Clicquot in my bag. Also, I'm not big drinker, so I'm very, very rarely excited about spirits, but this event was magical in the respect that I got to try high-end brands I otherwise wouldn't have sought out and was able to try them in a setting where the quality and nuances of the spirits, as well as their history, how they are made and what they pair with were on full display, so for a real foodie like myself it was truly a fascinating experience and one I won't soon forget. 

 

One last thought:

Please stop panicking over the coronavirus. It turns out freaking out over it could actually make it worse. So stop. Take the necessary precautions to protect yourself, like washing your hands well, covering your mouth with your elbow when you sneeze or cough and not touching your face if you can help it. And then let's all breathe out. More than likely, we're going to be okay.
